RE: What's wrong with my bike?

I have a dual speedometer/revcounter/odometer gauge on my bike. The odometer is always on, even when everything is completely off. This used to bother me, as I thought the little LCD gauge showing my miles would drain down the battery when I was'nt using the bike, so I bought a battery tender.
I put the tender on the bike the night before I go for a ride only.Sometimes I put it on a few hours ahead of a ride in the morning. Regardless, it appears to charge my battery in just a few hours max, and then I take it off.
I definitely agree with everyone here, that a big charger will cook your bat.
Another thing to consider is the charging system on your bike, maybe it's simply not working. Time to check the alternator. It's very simple all you need is a cheap voltmeter.

...and yep....I'm a true believer....I dutifully put mah hard earned money in the H-D plate as it gets passed around.....
...I put mah hard earned money in mah mortgage company's hand as well...but it's not nearly as much fun....ditto for mah electric bill...

RE: 2009 Victorys

...anyone here can buy any bike they want.....it's their money and they can plunk it down on any bike they want.
...since I was a youngster I've ridden most every type of bike made...I started with a 50cc Honda....and a wide variety of bikes since then....including several crotch rockets......
...I've owned 2 Harleys....
....none of the bikes I've owned give me as much satisfaction as my Hawg....it's an indescribable thing.
H-D is perfectly capable of making a " performance" bike. The V-rod is proof of that.
But think about this....H-D is a business !!!
And H-D knows that a HUGE part of their business is the AFTERMARKET !
Sure they could make and sell a H-D that has twice the power of the show room model for basically the same price, but why ???
They know that the average H-D buyer is going to spend another $3-4 grand or more....to jack up their bikes to where they should have been in the first place......and that's peanuts compared to what some bikers do.
Look at any H-D catalog...or any other other Aftermarket catalog that caters to Bikes....there is 1,000's and 1,000's of pages of every imaginable glitz, gizmo, chrome, doodad, thingy, horsepower enhancing, head turning money sucking device you could possible dream about.
99.9% of the aftermarket is geared towards the H-D biker and his hawg.
99.9% of any bike event is geared towards the H-D biker and his hawg.
Victory, Goldwing and all the other's can only dream to have such an aftermarket business.
Sure they make a better product going out the door....but from a purely business point of view.....H-D wins that battle hands down !!!
This has been...and always will be...the H-D business model going forward.
And that only accounts for the bikes....
H-D has a whole other gig going with apparel....they've plain and simple got a lock on that market.
H-D...with it's antiquated engine design....and 105 year old-hardly-changed-anything models......is still king of the roost !!!

RE: 2009 Victorys

...well...I suppose we talk about politics...or religion....
...y'know...this is a " chat room"....if nobody had anything to say 'bout anything.....none of us would be here....
....seems to me that every possible aspect of H-D has been discussed here at one time or another...
...and without trying to beat a dead horse here......it's clear to me that the Japs have tried to emulate the H-D when making their cruising bikes...you'd have to a complete idjit not to see that.
yep....you're right...many manufacturers copy other manufactures...no doubt about that...practically impossible to have an " original" idea anymore widdout a half dozen people trying to copy it.....
...there's no question every motorcycle manufacturer dissects the other guys bike to see what is going on.....see if there is anything they can copy...or replicate.....or improve on......
...but the one thing you can't copy....is "style".....you can't
copy " presence"...you can't copy " heritage".....
...and it is that .....that separates H-D from the rest !!!!

RE: 2009 Victorys

Tell me just one other bike manufacturer that has in "inline" V-twin engine !!!
There's lotsa V-twin engines....but only one "inline" V-twin.
Ok...S&S and some other engine builders make an " inline" V-twin, but they are all part of the Harley market as far as I'm concerned .....
most other V-twins have offset cylinders, use 60, 90 degrees...etc...

RE: 2009 Victorys

ok...why the V-twin development by Victory..and the Japs for their cruiser designs ???
...if they wanted to be different they could do opposing cylinders ( BMW)....or flat V-4 ( Goldwing ) or some other formation....
..but no....they want to emulate the Harley...so they go with the V-twin...... !!!!
..like wise....I'm sure Harley could develop any engine they wanted....but they are sticking to a tried and true formula...the Harley V-twin....pushrod driven....and that's 'jes the way we like it.

RE: 2009 Victorys

..well...I kinda havta agree with the one comment....that Harleys " appear" to look alike.
To the untrained eye...indeed....this is true....your average non-biker dude would not be able to tell a softail deluxe from fatboy...
In fact, when I went shopping for a Harley many years ago...I thought they all looked the same to me as well, even though I had a salesman trying to point all the differences....
The engine looks the same...regardless of which model.....
The tanks all look the same...except for the duece....and even then...you have to look twice...
Only the oil container identifies a softail.....
the bags usually identify a heritage....
I still have a hard time picking out a deluxe model from some of the other softail models....
etc...etc...
It's only after a rider has started to modify his bike, that I can pick them out of a line-up.
At a typical bike night here, there might be 200-300 bikes....I've come to know a lot of them by specific items which really make them different from other Harleys..

RE: 2009 Victorys

...y'know...dis Harley vs. other bikes is really quite simple.
You can't confuse a crotch rocket with a Harley....they are definitely a different kind of bike.
You can't confuse a BMW with a Harley....they are definitely in a niche of their own....
You can't confuse a Triumph with a Harley......etc...
But it stops there...
The Victory's, Suzuki's, Yamaha's, Honda's "Cruiser" bikes are all Harley clones...built to emanate the Harley.
A feeble attempt to cash in on the popularity of the H-D....is there any doubt on this ????

RE: 2009 Victorys

I gotta go with payloader.....the old Triumph 650 is still a head turner in my opinion....and what about the first Honda CB 750.....the BSA 750 triple...what about a good ole Norton thumper...the old style Beemers....
and....I dare anyone...anywhere....to go to any bike event...where there would be 1,000's of Harleys parked....and find any 2 of them the same.
Harleys are so personalized....no two are the same...
And while we are on the subject....every other " cruiser" bike out dere...is a Harley clone...in that...they are an inline V-twin....ok...not a true inline..but you know what I mean...
Technically, a Victory might be more advanced...but it still looks like **** to me....you give that Victory to the Harley stying dept...it will come out looking like a nice bike....
I would be nothing for Harley to go to an over-head cam design and other technical mods....but....it would'nt be a Harley anymore...and we would'nt buy it....and H-D knows this !!

RE: 07 Ultra w/Oil Cooler Question

...I have an oil cooler on my '03 Heritage.....went riding with a friend on his new '08 Road King....we would stop and check oil temps every once in a while for a comparison test.
...my bike consistently ran at around 190-200 ( the cooler opens up at 185) depending on whether we had been riding hard.....but never over 200...
His Road King consistently ran 215-230.......
so it certainly makes a difference .
